Grundlage für nachhaltiges Unternehmertum sind geteilte Werte – insbesondere die Tradition des ehrbaren Kaufmanns, die auf die Renaissance zurückgeht. „Es gilt nichts höher als das Wort des guten Kaufmanns und so bekräftigen sie ihre Eide, indem sie sagen: Bei der Ehre des wahren Kaufmanns“, schrieb der italienische Mathematiker und Franziskanermönch Luca Pacioli im Jahr 1495. Eine moderne Fassung bot der Schriftsteller Thomas Mann 1901 in seinem Roman „Buddenbrooks“: „Mein Sohn, sey mit Lust bey den Geschäften am Tage“, heißt es dort, „aber mache nur solche, dass wir bei Nacht ruhig schlafen können.“

Der gesamte rote Würfel widmet sich Werten. Auch die kaufmännischen Werte lassen sich auf die antiken Kardinaltugenden zurückbeziehen: Gerechtigkeit (iustitia, justice), Mäßigung (temperantia, temperance), Tapferkeit (fortitudo, courage) und Klugheit (prudentia, wisdom). Vom mittelalterlichen Philosophen und Theologen Thomas von Aquin (1225-1274) stammt die Formulierung, die Kardinaltugenden seien wie eine Angel, an der alle anderen Tugenden befestigt seien.

WORT UND WERK

An der Wand hängt ein Teil des – von uns rot eingefärbten – Holzschnitts „Die Allegorie des Handels“ von Jost Amann aus dem Jahr 1585. Der Holzschnitt, der im Original mehr als ein Meter hoch ist, zeigt Dutzende Händler in Antwerpen, einem der wirtschaftlichen Drehkreuze im 16. Jahrhundert. Nicht nur werden die einzelnen Stationen im Handel dargestellt, auch werden sie kommentiert. In der Bildmitte lautet eine Inschrift: „Das Handeln fördert solche Leuth / Bey welchen wohnt Aufrichtigkeit / Das Wort u. Werk auch Herz und Mund / Zusammen stimm‘ mit gutem Grund.“
